Einar Cameras Support Automated Depot Access for Vilnius Public Transport Fleet

CityPro used 15 Adaptive Recognition Einar cameras as part of an automated gate access system for VVT, Vilniaus Viešasis Transportas, one of Lithuania’s largest public transport companies.

In 2025, CityPro implemented one of its largest access control projects for VVT, Vilniaus Viešasis Transportas.

VVT operates a fleet of more than 500 buses and trolleybuses in Vilnius. Every morning, more than 330 buses and over 170 trolleybuses enter the streets of the city. In the evening, a similar number of vehicles return to base within a few hours.

For this type of operation, depot access needs to be fast, secure, and properly recorded. The client needed high-speed gates supported by reliable license plate recognition to help prevent unauthorized entry while keeping daily fleet movement smooth.

The project was delivered by CityPro, with Adaptive Recognition’s Einar cameras used as the license plate recognition layer. A total of 15 Einar camera units were installed across three VVT depots in Vilnius. The challenge: secure depot access during peak vehicle movement

Several hundred vehicles leave the depots in the early morning and return in the late afternoon. During these periods, access control cannot slow down daily operations.

The client needed a system that could identify authorized vehicles quickly and accurately at the gates. The purpose was also clear from a security perspective: prevent unauthorized vehicles from entering depot areas from outside.

For VVT, recognition accuracy and reading speed were central requirements. If license plate recognition is too slow or unreliable, the gate process becomes a bottleneck. If access is not properly logged, the operator loses visibility over vehicle movement.

The solution: Einar cameras integrated with CP-Park

CityPro implemented the access system using its CP-Park platform together with Adaptive Recognition’s Einar cameras.

The process is simple. When a vehicle approaches the gate, the Einar camera reads the license plate. The plate number is checked in the CP-Park system. If the vehicle is authorized, the gate opens, access is granted, and the event is logged.

If the plate number is not found in the system, the gate remains closed. An LED screen then informs the driver that the vehicle is not allowed to enter.

This setup gives VVT automated access control across the three depots, while also creating a real-time record of vehicle entries and exits.

Automated recognition for daily depot operations

The three Vilnius depots handle concentrated vehicle movement every day. Buses and trolleybuses need to be identified accurately as they enter and leave, especially during the morning and late afternoon peaks.

For this project, Einar cameras were installed to support automatic license plate recognition at depot gates. The recognition data helps CP-Park identify authorized vehicles, reduce manual verification, and create a clear record of vehicle movement.

According to CityPro, the biggest improvement was the move to a digital process and smoother control of vehicles during peak times.

“The biggest improvement is digitalization and smoother control and flow of vehicles during peak times, in the early morning and late afternoon. Einar cameras ensured 99.8% license plate recognition, which was one of the core requirements of the project.”

The project delivered:

· 99.8%+ license plate recognition accuracy

· Up to 70% faster entry and exit compared with manual checks

· 24/7 automated access control

· 100% vehicle movement visibility with real-time logs and reporting

· Significant reduction in unauthorized entries through automated validation

· Up to 60% reduced manual workload for security and operations teams

The results support smoother depot flow during busy periods, improved site security, faster fleet turnaround, and better data for planning and operational optimization.

Einar as the recognition layer

The access system relies on accurate vehicle identification. In this project, Einar cameras provide the license plate recognition needed to identify buses and trolleybuses as they move through controlled depot gates.

Adaptive Recognition did not deliver the complete system. Einar formed the recognition layer inside a CityPro-led implementation, helping CP-Park automate access decisions, movement logging, and reporting.

For fleet environments, this matters because the camera is not only capturing an image. It is supplying structured vehicle recognition data that the access system can use in daily operations.

From manual checks to digital access control

The project helped VVT move from a more manual entry and exit process toward digital access control.

Authorized vehicles can pass through the gates faster. Unauthorized vehicles are stopped automatically. Each access event is logged in the system, giving the operator better visibility over vehicle movement across all three depots.

For VVT, this means fewer manual checks, smoother traffic flow during peak hours, and a more reliable record of entries and exits.

For Adaptive Recognition, the project shows how Einar can support partner-led fleet access projects where license plate recognition needs to work as part of a larger traffic or access management system.
